On August 19th, CGSR hosted an interactive workshop entitled Independent Biotech: the Regulation/Innovation Dilemma. This workshop brought non-government funded biotech researchers from Do-It-Yourself community labs, start-ups, and incubators together with regulators, community leaders, and national lab scientists to discuss the implications of several plausible scenarios. Each scenario was specifically designed to illustrate different aspects of both the benefits and risks of independent biological research. The workshop provided a forum to highlight issues raised by the growth of largely unregulated biotechnology laboratories and discuss measures that might reduce health and security risks while preserving their open and innovative nature.
